Cora Grim has been training to take over as the Grim Reaper almost since birth, but even though it’s not quite time for Cora to take her Father’s position as Master of Death, she is suddenly thrust into the role when an uprising sends her rushing into the mortal realm to collect the soul of a dying king. Except, no amount of training prepared her for Prince Antoine Leonardo III. Leo has no interest in the throne, but there’s something interesting about the girl only he seems to be able to see. If trading his own life for his father’s is the only way to save the king, Leo is willing to do so, but will the Grim Reaper agree to the trade or will she require something more?

A unique fantasy tale, “Mistress Grim” gives the myth of a grim reaper a new spin. Cora and Leo are an interesting couple, bound by duty but longing for one another. The romance itself is an insta-love that blossoms immediately. The conflict between the reaper rebels and Cora is the main focus in the story and provides plenty of tension and action. However, the pace is very quick and the characters and story lack depth as a result. At the same time, the myths around the grim reaper and the fates leave plenty of room for further exploration, and the conflict itself is interesting enough to keep the reader engaged from beginning to end. Overall, a nice light fantasy read.
