The Care and Feeding of a Publishing Contract

There’s been another scandal in Romanceland. I won’t name names or point fingers, but one phrase stuck with me: “I should’ve read my contract better!”
At the same time, the new Amazon Scout program (for those of you not in the know, Amazon is offering a new interesting program for self-publishing authors that might be worth checking out), is raising a lot of questions about timelines, deadlines and other fun things only authors think about.
I was chatting with my good friend LaVerne Thompson about this new program and showing her some things I found online about their contract--terms I thought were questionable. And LaVerne answered me with a very simple phrase along the lines of: “That’s why we negotiate contracts. “
Now that author who said, "I should’ve read my contract better” and others like her should have had someone like LaVerne go over anything the author was asked to sign. Obviously not all publishing contracts are alike, but I thought “LaVerne’s list of common sense things" would be a great topic for my column.
