Sannah is a young woman who lives in the Stone Age with her clan. One day, without warning, her village is raided by another clan. Only the women capable of carrying a child are taken and everyone else is killed. Sannah is claimed by the leader, Memmet. He is both a warrior and a shaman. All the women and children in his clan have died of an illness, and for his clan to survive, they need more women. He is intrigued by Sannah. She is different than all the other women he has known. While Sannah is grateful he isn’t cruel to her, she can’t forget about what happened to her clan. The women have difficulty adjusting to their fate. They are torn between resisting and survival.

This ancient historical shows what happens when desperation and survival come into play. The Stone Age is a tricky time period when it comes to fiction. There are moments that are difficult to comprehend because everything was so different during that time. There are moments of abuse and assault in this book. All the characters seem a little one-dimensional, but it could once again be because of the time period. Everything revolves around survival and Sannah’s dilemma whether to really trust Memmet. It is wonderful to see how much women are critical to society’s roles, and not just in producing children. They are just as strong and capable as men. This book is for those readers who are really looking to get lost in another place and time.
