The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back

Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, but what do you do if you are the ugly stepsister and you’ve been in love with the prince since you were nine years old? Mattie Lowe considers herself the ugly stepsister, and when you have a popular, perfect, and stunningly blonde stepsister like Ella, you’d agree. Worse, her mother constantly puts her down over Skype, she’s the target of popular school mean-girl Mercedes, and her stepsister is dating the love of her life, Jake Kingston. When push comes to shove Mattie is done being overlooked and decides to change her life, starting by running for senior class president against Jake. When the two are thrust together at school Mattie gets help from an unexpected fairy godmother and maybe a chance at her own happily ever after.

A fantastic YA contemporary Cinderella story with a quirky twist and sweet romance! Mattie is all teenager without the non-ending angst. She stumbles and misunderstands some things but she’s amusingly funny while she does. Jake is a great guy. He makes some punk mistakes himself but he shows depth and the romance flows smoothly. Wilson writes enchanting scenes as the characters realize different things about themselves and one another as well as face the typical challenges of high school. Teens as well as adults will enjoy Mattie’s quirks and success as she grows, and recognizes which character in Cinderella she really is.
