PARANORMAL/GREEK MYTHOLOGY:  Book two in the Descendant Prophecies series, Skylar Rome and Mason Grand are back in this fast-paced and action-packed sequel. Skylar is making her way through some serious life changes:  finally entering college, dealing with the mysterious re-appearance of a lost loved one—and having a swoon-worthy descendant of a god as her boyfriend. But there’s no slowing down as Skylar uncovers more information about her past, her changing powers, and the vultures from Hades who seek to hunt her down and wipe her from the face of the earth—and the heavens.

It is important to note that in order to fully appreciate this much-nuanced book, a reader must read the first book in the series, “From Gods”. On its own merit, though, this book does an excellent job of drawing the reader into the storyline, and the reader is drawn into the action from page one.

Where the story lagged, however, was in characterization. Although the plot was well conceived, the characters at times seemed to fall into caricature, leaving the reader to wonder if they’d read about this character before. Overall, Ms. Ting seamlessly blends classic mythology with contemporary college-life, and heightens the stakes against seemingly impossible odds. Without a doubt, this author rocks at world building! There are not many books that can effectively tackle the topics of sorority pledging, underage drinking, and battling with a descendant of Hera and Athena (but Ms. Ting does it all).
