The Compendium (The Variant Conspiracy: Book 2)

Christine
Hart
Genre:
New Adult

SCI-FI:  This thriller pits twin siblings Irina and brother Ilya against their father, Ivan, who runs a corporation called Innovira Industries. Ivan is planning to implement a program called The Compendium Transmuto. He’s already engaged in unethical human mutation testing, and wants to recreate the world, reseeding it with Variant life forms and plant life. His goal is to kill off mankind and leave the planet free for its new mutant life forms. As Irina, Ilya and their friends close in on the evil doers, Ivan and his band of variants produce roadblocks and attacks that lessen their numbers, and try their patience. Can they stop him before he destroys the world as they know it?

This attention getter rushes out of the gate at full speed, pulling the reader into its intense storyline! It was tough at first, trying to catch up with everything that had happened in book one, leaving gaps in storyline and questions for this reviewer. Written in Irina’s POV, her name doesn’t appear until page 7, causing further confusion. With several editing glitches, it’s otherwise well-written. It’s strikingly similar to the X-Men comic series/movies, with each mutant having his/her own unique powers: fire, water, telekinesis, strength, etc. The author did a nice job of blending sci-fi with concerns and fears of current times. The well-developed story is peppered with plenty of conflict and just enough romantic angst to keep the reader emotionally attached, achieving a satisfactory ending while setting up the story for the next leg of the exciting journey. Great job, Ms. Hart!
