Major Dominic “Dove” Doverton rows out on the choppy waters of a stormy sea to rescue sailors from a sinking ship. Hearing screams from a wooden box, he hauls it aboard his tiny boat and forces it open to find a shivering, half-drowned waif. Once taken to the vicarage, the girl is frightened, but finds solace in holding Dove’s hands.

Frank Carter has just returned to his hometown looking for the saloon. Reaching his destination, he finds the saloon is now a fine eatery run by Cat Purdue. She goes by Catherine now and no longer sings in the saloon. Frank is jealous of all the men he assumes Catherine has bedded, but in reality, he is the only one. This is a bone of contention between the two.

Susannah Moorcroft runs from her murderous husband, who is intent on killing her. As they run through the bog, he falls into chest-deep water and his venomous spewing turns to cries for help. Susannah watches as her husband sinks into the swamp, breathing his last. Later, Susannah changes her last name and purchases a decrepit inn, to begin life anew with her maid.
