Scent of the Soul

In Scotland of the twelfth century, Somerled the Mighty dominates most of the west, working hard to expand his territory and making alliances. He’s a powerful warrior; a strong and determined man, and the last thing he needs right now is to fall for a slave girl. But Breagha is so intriguing he can barely resist. Breagha is promised to another, and he could do without losing his alliance with the rival king she belongs to. Always willing to put his people’s needs first, Somerled doubts himself for the first time ever when Breagha disappears, and he realizes just how infatuated he is with her, and just how much he wants her back. Something evil and life-threatening has got a hold of Breagha, and even a mighty warrior might not get her back. 

This book offers a sublime mix of history and suspense, and leaves the reader on the edge of their seat for the entire book. The only downside is the romance, which is rushed, as both characters fall for each other almost instantly. On their own, the characters were interesting though - in particular Breagha, who appeared to have many secrets. "Scent of the Soul" is a unique historical read based on an era not a lot of authors dare to write about.
