Bethea Glanville was determined to become a part of, and thoroughly enjoy, the high society of Edinburgh… and then she learned how many rules there are to follow, how boring it is, and how malicious the people can be. After attracting the unwanted and terrifying attention of the Earl of Montieth, Bethea winds up in the wrong place at the wrong time. She learns of a conspiracy to overthrow King George, which results in her being kidnapped. Camden Kennedy, undercover spy for the Crown comes to her rescue and winds up having to marry her to save her reputation among the elite. With the threats facing Bethea and Camden coming from multiple directions, will their marriage remain one of convenience, easily annulled, or will they both realize what they always wanted is right in front of them?

The seventh book in the series, “To Marry a Highland Marauder” is an lively romp in historical Scotland. Bethea is an enjoyable character, and her sister is likewise. Camden is the typical protective alpha male. Characters from previous books in this series also make an appearance. What lets this story down is that Montieth and his partner are set up to be terrible, crafty villains, yet their machinations and wicked intentions are stopped far too easily. To say Montieth’s besting feels lack-luster and disappointing is an understatement. The build-up of Montieth leads the reader to believe he is far more devious and cunning than he turns out to be—willing to do whatever it takes to have Bethea for himself, no matter what that is. Even with that, this is an entertaining summer afternoon read.
