Four Chambers

Andra is a serious medical student with lofty goals, none of which include members of the opposite sex. Every time she allows herself to be sidetracked, even slightly, her focus slips - at least it does according to her impossibly high standards. Then she yanks backward, diving headfirst into her studies and school, ignoring that other people exist. Everett has been in the same programs, in the same schools, and eventually at the same hospital competing for the same job as Andra. She fails to see serendipity in this, but he doesn't. If only she'd slow down and live.

A med-school based new adult romance, "Four Chambers" follows the characters through to adulthood.  Using a background of Chinese mysticism and an interfering, yet never aging character as a plot device, author Julie Wright keeps this story moving forward, though readers may often want to smack Andra for thinking too forward and missing out on so much. A strong heroine allows no one to interfere with her goals, but this character does that too often, and sometimes for really dumb reasons. But, never fear, there is an HEA—a nearly too-late one, but some heroines are completely clueless. A downfall of this tale is that it is written in first person. Everett has such rich potential just waiting to burst out, and most of it is left as an afterthought, if that. His side, his thoughts, the true "him" is nearly non-existent and will be frustrating for readers because he deserves so much more than he is given. This journey from career-driven youth to focused resident and finally to a human doctor with a heart, will put a smile on readers' faces.
