PARANORMAL/SUSPENSE:  Laura Horton is an addiction counselor who returns from college to live with an old friend and begin her career. What her friend failed to tell her, however, was that the living situation had some last minute changes—mainly that her friend was moving out, and her now ex-boyfriend was remaining in the house. Throw in that the house is next to a graveyard, and Laura’s new situation isn’t exactly ideal. Officer Miller Stanford is the very ex-boyfriend, and he gives Laura far from a warm welcome. It doesn’t help that he is battling his own demons from the past—and seeing ghosts.

Claire Gem has created a book that is both sensual and emotional while at the same time being creepy and mysterious. So many emotional strings are pulled throughout the novel — sympathy for Miller, cheering for Laura, and getting the full-on shivers minutes later. Ms. Gem’s writing paints vivid imagery throughout the novel, and creates gripping scenes. Miller and Laura have an instant connection that slow-burns into an inferno of desire. The emotional drama is so compelling and real. Between all of these elements, listeners will be thoroughly satisfied!

Cheyenne Bizon provides a strong narration. Her characterizations are diverse and on point. With her voice, she is able to guide listeners through the dark setting of the asylum and amplify the creep factor, yet invoke the tender emotions of the characters.

This novel is perfect for listeners who are looking for a steamy romance that is also heartfelt and emotional. It’s also a perfect fit for fans of horror. “Spirits of the Heart” is a fantastic blend of both genres. This is a great listen for late nights and gloomy days!
