HISTORICAL/ANTHOLOGY:  Jane Austen wrote about strong and witty women, who are still some of the most iconic characters in literature.  However, did you ever wonder what happened to these beloved characters after the story ended, or wish to have a backstory for another?  Questions such as: how did Charlotte truly get along with Mr. Collins, or, what happened behind the scenes with the Dashwood sisters?  All these questions and many more are explored in the short story collection “Rational Creatures.” Each author tackles a work of Jane Austen, highlighting the lovely, strong, and rational side of some of the great characters found in her work.

Those who love Jane Austen or historical romance will thoroughly enjoy this collection.  The authors each explore a different character and tell a story not found in the pages of its corresponding book, yet keep the spirit of the work itself.  Each story stands alone and may be enjoyed in any order.  Every story is beautiful and uniquely written. However, if one is not familiar with the novel the character is from, they may not fully appreciate the story or understand how it fits within the original work.  “Rational Creatures” is the perfect anthology collection for those who wish to explore more of the beautiful world Jane Austen created.

Ms. Riley effortlessly transports listeners to England and brings life to all of these amazing characters.  Each story and character within has its own flavor and voice, so there is no confusion on who is speaking, which creates an enjoyable listening experience.  The pacing, the emotion, and the articulation are done well, for an almost flawless performance.  If one is looking for a historical audiobook, that is performed well, “Rational Creatures” is definitely one to pick up!
