The Perks and Pitfalls of Co-Authoring

Some truly amazing books have been born from the minds of multiple authors! Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson continued the legacy of "Dune" after the passing of Frank Herbert. Best-selling novels like "The Glass Ocean", "The Talisman", and "The Expanse" were co-written by two authors, each sharing the creative load and contributing to the process of bringing the stories to life, one word at a time.
Writing with a co-author can seem like a daunting task—which, to be fair, it is—but it definitely has its perks to accompany the pitfalls.
Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of working with a co-author, and follow it up with some of the things that make the task harder than solo-writing.
Benefits of Co-Writing
Half the workload – However co-authors split the work (writing a chapter each, or writing a draft each), the workload is considerably lessened by two minds bent to the task. The amount of work each author contributes will vary greatly according to the personalities involved, but because both parties are laboring over the manuscript, the work is greatly reduced.
Greater creativity – Authors are all creative people, capable of conceiving truly imaginative tales, but each author is still limited to their specific scope of imagination, based on perceptions and experiences. However, when two authors combine, they each bring their own sense of the world to the table, and together, that breeds something far greater than the sum of either part. Each feeds into the collective well of creativity and from it is born something neither could have conceived alone...
