PARANORMAL:  Liam Whelan is the head of his house of empaths, and one half to a rare pair of soulmates. Unfortunately, his only leads to find her are his father’s confusing visions. Following yet another vision, Liam begins to court Laxshmi Kapadia, an Indian-American high school student with a strict traditional mother and the weight of her family’s expectations weighing her down. With budding empathic abilities, Laxshmi knows there is something unusual about Liam and his attentions, but her fears force Liam to keep their relationship at a slow pace. Unfortunately, they might not have time for slow, as the possibility of a soulmated pair brings the attention of enemies and puts Laxshmi with her undeveloped abilities at risk.

A new twist on soulmates, “Soulmated” is the first in the paranormal YA “Joining of Souls” series and full of exciting ups and downs, mixed cultures, and world building. The story has plenty of romance, and interesting characters combined with a steady pace that keeps the plot moving. The cliff hanger at the end is the biggest drawback with the secrets Liam is hiding from Laxshmi as a conflict motivator being the second. Otherwise, the idea of an Indian American and Irish couple allows for some great plot possibilities and the natural complications of their relationship combined with empathetic powers, provides for some unique romantic situations. This is a great start to a new series, and fans of YA paranormal romance should definitely add this book to their to-read lists.
