Tori Rourke has been dealt a bad hand in life.  After ten years in prison for a crime she did not commit, she has finally been released.  She’s learned a new trade and is determined to put her new skills to use, but she’s not stopping at her culinary skills.  No, Tori has a life to save and a mafia kingpin to take down.  Attorney Grady Fletcher is more than a crusader for the innocent.  After Tori steps through the gates of freedom, Grady will walk through the gates of hell to keep her safe. True, he has feelings for her, but he’s reluctant to become more involved based on her past associations — which might be the obstacle that keeps them apart.

Mafia, suspense, and the rugged shores of California paint the setting for this high-stakes tale, rounded out with outrageous carnival food.  Tori, while appearing to be extremely intelligent, may give readers heartburn with the food combinations she creates as well as some of the choices she makes.  While part of a series, readers unfamiliar with previous installments will be stymied due to the intricate backstories that lend to a loss of detail in the present telling.  There are also numerous copy editing issues that plague this tale.  Readers will be able to grasp the plot thread throughout, but they will just as likely be confused by disjointed transitions. Even with his boyish charm and apparent physique, Grady’s association with law enforcement agencies may not ring true with die-hard suspense readers. At the end of it all, however, a resounding happily-ever-after wraps up this complex tale.
