DIESELPUNK:  Dottie had a rough upbringing but now, at twenty-three, things are beginning to look up. She left her small town years ago and is now successfully pursuing her singing career. Not to mention that she has found her soul mate in her fiancé, Johny. He’s everything she could ever want. At least, she thinks he is…

Tim is an eagle shifter who can travel from the world of the living to the “in-between.” His god has put him in charge of passing souls over. Things are going as expected, until he’s pulled into the in-between against his will. There he finds a beautiful woman with an enchanting voice that grabs him like no other, but there are two problems: first, she’s not dead. Second, no one can find her body.

A story that is part supernatural, part diesel-punk and romance, “Soul Song” is a concept with great potential. The author does a great job giving the story a fairytale feel with the right bit of mystery to interest the reader. Additionally, the author is skilled at capturing dialect, in this case, Dottie’s country slang. What the story lacks is suspense. Everything goes as the reader expects. Outside of Dottie’s dialect, the dialogue seems robotic. Tim is dull as a character. Overall the story lacks action, aside from the slightly exaggerated sex scenes. Many of the “close” relationships seem unfounded and the soul mate trope is relied on heavily to convince one why the leads should be together. Essentially, Tim and Dottie got their happy ending a little too easily. All of this left the reader feeling indifferent about the story. Still, a nice read for a lazy day.
