Adopted at a young age, Bex St. James has spent years hiding and suppressing her she-dragon from her non-shifter family using science. With her time running out, Bex suddenly finds herself drawn to the small town of Ember Brooke, and Thane Munroe. Thane has been waiting a century for his mate. When Bex arrives, he immediately senses the change in the atmospheres and that she is his mate. With only limited time to woo her, Thane must amp up his charm if he plans to win her. Then a madman threatens not only their future but also the future of all shifter kind.  Will Bex and Thane’s budding romance survive the flames, or will outside forces tear them apart?

“Scorched Hearts” is a fantastical novella about dragon shifters and finding one’s place in the world. Despite having an interesting world of shifters, the author does not go into too much detail about the fantasy aspect. The author could have done a lot with this aspect especially since it seems like the shifters are not a secret in this world. Instead, we are given a quick insta-lust romance spurred by the “one true mate” trope.  While this trope is overused, the writer did well with creating believable chemistry between the leads. The hero leaves the reader conflicted as he jumps between being sweet and thoughtful to sexist and oversexed in a matter of sentences, though he ultimately proves himself a worthy love interest. That aside, the story is a quick read with steamy scenes, interesting characters that manage to have depth, and a promise of more to come in subsequent installments.
