Sophia Sullivan is torn between two worlds: her witch coven and her hard-earned work as a doctor. She has made a vow to devote herself to saving lives, but when a fellow witch opens a portal and risks the lives of everyone in Chicago, Sophia is torn between following the law of witches and taking a life, or her vow as a doctor to save a life. Her decision is instinctive, and she allows the witch to live, but in doing so, she has allowed a dead man and a demon to wonder the streets of Chicago, as well as risked her own reputation and life. Now, she must clean up the mess, close the portal, and pray she keeps her own head.

This story of witchcraft and magic is well researched and filled with lots of action! Sophia is strong in her convictions, determined to save the day while maintaining her moral ground and is overall very likable. However, the rest of the characters fall flat, having little development or several unlikeable qualities. The relationship between Sophia and her brother is overly-intimate and feels unnatural at times. The main antagonist never truly strikes as the book, unfortunately, ends in a cliffhanger despite being a full-length novel with the potential to finish up. There is a love interest, but nothing comes of that either. This story could benefit from lots of content editing, as it is hard to follow in many areas. The details in the magic were impeccable and with a good editor and some polishing, this book has potential to captivate!
