Callie McKenzie’s life has been nothing except abandonment, pain, loss, suffering, and abuse. Born to a crack-addicted mother and unknown father, Callie finds her way into foster care where she is used as a babysitter, maid, and cook. Finally adopted by loving parents, Callie is excited for her new life until a terrible tragedy changes her future. When an unfamiliar relative gains custody of her, she is beaten and abused. Unable to take the cruelty any longer, she flees and ends up being found by Jake, the President of an MC biker club.  Little does she know that this man will change her life forever.

“Broken Bitch” is an intense read focusing on the strength of the heroine, Callie McKenzie, and her determination to build the life she was meant to have. The second installment of The Broken Series by A.L. Simpson, it can, nonetheless, be read as a standalone novel.  The story of Callie’s early life moves at a fast pace, focusing on heavy abuse.  Once Callie and Jake meet, the story slows down in order to chronicle their love. The writing does not stay consistent; it changes from past to present tense continuously. One example of the many is a sentence reading, “When they see us they stood.”  In addition, the hero’s last name changes throughout the book from Prescott to Prentiss to Prescott. These repeated erratic changes in tense and names may be distracting for readers who concentrate on the details. Nevertheless, the story is entertaining and should keep its audience interested.
