Whatcha Gonna Do With a Cowboy: A Deputy Laney Briggs Novella (Deputy Laney Briggs #1.5)

Jodi
Linton
Genre:
Mystery

Deputy Laney Briggs of Pistol Rock, TX, leads a relatively quiet existence as one of a tiny handful of law officers in town. As lifelong resident, she knows everything about everyone in town, and they know just as much about her. She gets a call about the local high school football coach being out cold under the bleachers:  in a thong, bra, and thigh-highs. With an interfering Federal Marshall, the coach's wife missing, and Gunner, her often absent boyfriend, all thrown into the mix, Laney has her hands full!

Just one novella in a series about the main character, Ms. Linton takes readers on a ride full of giggles, hot scenes, and surprises as Laney negotiates a horrible family, a boyfriend who’s a Texas Ranger, and lots of unanswered questions about why a football coach would dress in drag, and where his wife went. The characters are fully fleshed out, well-rounded, and every one of them has an amusing quirk. Or five. The down side of this novella being part of a series based on Laney is that there is a good chunk of backstory that's alluded to often, which seems to be causing problems and odd behavior in both Laney and Gunner, but it’s never explained. Readers choosing this as their first “Laney” book might find it frustrating to have so much alluded to, and nothing described fully. Laney’s speech is an awkward mix of sophistication and crassness.

A cast of characters whose family ties and love of small towns bind them together, for better and for worse, this read is a comical, hot ride through Texas.
