InD'Ear: What Authors Can Do For Narrators

At the wildly successful InD’Scribe conference in October in Burbank, California, I had the pleasure of teaching a workshop on the basics of making an audiobook, primarily using ACX as the platform. ACX has become the go-to DIY model for an overwhelming number of independently published authors these days. As I progressed through my presentation, I couldn’t help but notice participants’ ears prick up and how they sat forward in their chairs when I touched on the topic of how to interact with a narrator on a business level. After the workshop, a few approached me to ask timidly how to not inadvertently step on a narrator’s toes. The consensus was authors are often unaware of etiquette, or how to approach the business arrangement of hiring and collaborating with an audiobook narrator. I promised to cover this topic in my column before the year was over. So, let’s dive right in!
