Fiction: It's What Makes Us Human

There are a number of things that separate us from the animals we share our planet with: opposable thumbs, our ability to speak, a complex systems of emotions and thoughts, advanced cognition, and more. But, you'll find many of those traits are shared by other creatures.  Monkeys have opposable thumbs. Parrots can mimic human speech. Dolphins have problem-solving skills similar to those of humans.
The only thing that truly separates us from the animals is our ability to write, tell, and create stories.
We can no longer say that humans are the most intelligent beings on Earth. Artificial intelligences have been created which far surpass the human abilities to calculate and think rationally. However, our empathic connection with others is something machines cannot truly mimic.
And that connection may have come from stories…
