“No.” The single word shattered the silence caused by Melly’s announcement that they were leaving Doctor Melbourne’s employ posthaste. She’d expected a bit of resistance from her sisters but it wasn’t one of their voices that broke the silence. All eyes turned to Melbourne, mouths snapping shut. He stood there, arms crossed over his chest, his gaze steady on Melly’s face and no one else’s. Light streamed through the window, but Melly couldn’t read the emotion blazing in his eyes. Anger, surely, was part of it, and perhaps a bit of betrayal at what he might view as abandonment. Guilt surged up in her. Her gaze dropped for just a moment as she attempted to gather her resolve.
Drawing in a deep breath, she met his gaze again. “We must. Crouch will not stop and he will not stop at me. He will kill us all.”
