Apologia from a Teenager’s Mother

“I paid the girl that comes to clean
Ten bucks this morning, John.
She worked like hell to wax the floor
Your muddy shoes are on.
I know! It doesn’t matter and
You’ve heard it all before…”

And John walked through the
    nagging house
And slammed his bedroom door.



Poor George

He said, “I really loved you.”
Well…yes, I know it’s true.
How sad the loss of present tense
When any love is through.

But sadness that a love is done—
Well, that I comprehend.
The lovely one that broke in two
Because it would not bend.

But what he said that followed—
Well…now, that was really sad.
He said, “Oh yes, I loved you
