Archetyping: The Genius

Do you remember the character of Henry Higgins? The younger generation may not know much about him, but the rest of us remember. Why is that, do you think? Because the incomparable Rex Harrison played the part of Henry in “My Fair Lady” in 1964? He did a magnificent job, but I don’t think that’s the sole reason. Rex Harrison’s role wouldn’t have existed without George Bernard Shaw’s character in “Pygmalion”. So Shaw must have done something right. He may not have known about archetypes—the term wasn’t used until a few years after the first performance of “Pygmalion”—but he obviously knew a lot about human nature and the effect of one’s personality on relationships. Think of all the characters in the play/movie of “My Fair Lady”. They are all dynamic! Even the housekeeper, Mrs. Pearce, and Freddy Eynsford-Hill are easy to remember all these years later.
