Archetyping: The Best Friend

The girl next door. When anyone says that, your mind automatically conjures up a picture of someone, doesn’t it? I always think of Sandra Bullock. For example, take “While You Were Sleeping”. Her character is the quiet, classically beautiful girl who moons over the gorgeous businessman who passes her train booth every day. Her hunky businessman never notices her. After all, she isn’t flashy, overtly sexy, or even flirty... Long story short: the guy falls on the train tracks, she rescues him, he’s in a coma, she gets mistaken as the fianceé at the hospital, his family falls in love with her—especially the brother—while the guy is sleeping. Love it! (Especially during the holidays.) Sandra Bullock’s role is a perfect example of the Best Friend archetype. The Alpha archetype she’s pining after doesn’t notice her at all. The Hero archetype falls in love with her for all of her beauty—especially the inner kind—and they live happily ever after.
